RFID Portals

Portals come in a diverse range of shapes and sizes and are essentially designed to achieve the maximum possible detection rate of RFID tags as quickly as possible as they pass through. Given that the human body is comprised of a high percentage of water, it will naturally act as a dampener for radio signals at higher radio frequencies, if they need to pass through the body to achieve detection.

RFID Portals are used for a variety of purposes, including: in retail to detect items that are leaving the store without having been paid for; in asset tracking to detect movement of an item from one zone to another; and in libraries to ensure that items leaving the premises have been checked out to the patron. All of these purposes call for a reasonably high rate of detection, but in the case of libraries and retail there is a greater likelihood that the item is being deliberately removed from the premises illegitimately, so there is a real potential for asset loss as the dedicated thief will take steps to avoid the items being detected.

In many cases there is also a desire to make the security or portal solution as unobtrusive as possible.

Adilam has undertaken extensive research and testing of various gate designs over many years to achieve an optimal design for security gates, achieving a high degree of reliability and accuracy with an aesthetically pleasing or unobtrusive footprint, with a price tag that fits the budget.

For UHF, the portals are of our own design and we offer upright portals, overhead portals and floor portals.

Upright Portals have a strong visual presence so patrons or customers can see that there is security, whereas floor portals and overhead portals are intended to be more unobtrusive.

HF uprights can generally be up to 1m apart (depending on model) with real 3-D detection that complies with ADA requirements, whereas UHF uprights can be up to 2m apart.

There are options for integrated people counting, sensors for portal activation to avoid false alarms, and a standby mode for decreased power consumption.

Additionally floor portals come in two basic configurations (raised and embedded) and a range of sizes up to 4.8m. This presents a way of integrating your security into the floor itself, for the most unobtrusive solution. The inset of the floor gates can be finished in a selected range of coverings, including timber, carpet and ceramic tile, bearing in mind that the choice of floor covering may have a adverse impact on the performance of the portal. Some carpet underlay for example has carbon and metal threads woven into it for strength which can cause attenuation of the radio signals.
